Residents in the Asante Akyem North Constituency have criticised the arrest of their Member of Parliament, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, by authorities in the Netherlands, describing the incident as unfair, embarrassing, and a disgrace to the constituency.
The MP was reportedly arrested on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, according to a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.
Parliament, in a statement released the same day, confirmed the detention of Ohene Kwame Frimpong and said it had formally been informed of the development.
The statement added that Parliament is engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain further details surrounding the incident.
Reacting to the arrest in an interview with Citi News on Wednesday, May 13, some residents expressed frustration and disbelief over the development.
“It’s embarrassing. They just want to disgrace our MP. He does not deserve this,” one resident said.
Another resident, Nana King Stone, stated, “He is not a bad person. This is a ploy to disgrace Kwame Frimpong. He has nothing to do with the accusations.”
A third resident added, “I am hurt by the arrest because he has been very helpful to the constituency. We pray he comes out of this.”
