Court stops NPP polling station elections in Bunkpurugu

The High Court in Nalerigu, in Ghana’s North East Region, has issued an interim injunction restraining the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from proceeding with polling station elections in the Bunkpurugu Constituency.

The order was granted on 8 May 2026 in a case filed by Konlan Yenuyiab and 16 others against the NPP and another party. The applicants had moved an ex parte motion seeking to stop the elections, which were scheduled to take place between 10 May and 15 May 2026.

Presiding Judge, Justice Samuel Bright Acquah, granted the injunction after reviewing the affidavit evidence and hearing arguments from counsel for the applicants, Solomon Biitian Damtar.

According to the court, the applicants demonstrated that they are members of the party in good standing and therefore had the capacity to bring the application. The court also noted that, based on documents presented, there appeared to be breaches of the party’s internal rules and possible violations of natural justice.

The court further held that allowing the elections to proceed could cause irreparable harm and potentially render any future ruling meaningless.

As a result, the court ordered that the defendants, their agents, and anyone acting on their behalf are restrained from conducting the polling station elections in the constituency.

The injunction is to remain in force for 10 days.
