President John Dramani Mahama has called on Muslims across Ghana and the wider public to reject attitudes and actions that breed selfishness, hatred, greed, and division in society.
Delivering his Eid-ul-Adha address to the nation at the Independence Square on Wednesday, May 27, President Mahama said the celebration of Eid should serve as a reminder of the values of sacrifice, unity, compassion, and devotion to humanity.
Addressing hundreds of Muslim worshippers, traditional leaders, government officials, and members of the diplomatic community gathered for the occasion, the President urged Ghanaians to use the spiritual significance of Eid-ul-Adha to promote peace, tolerance, and national cohesion.
According to him, the festival goes beyond the ritual slaughtering of animals and rather represents deeper moral and spiritual lessons that should guide people in their daily lives and interactions with one another.
“The lessons of Eid-ul-Adha extend beyond the slaughtering of animals. The occasion calls on us to sacrifice, be selfless, don’t hate one another, don’t be greedy, not to divide, and not to be indifferent to each others suffering.”
He stressed that the growing social and economic challenges confronting many societies today make it even more important for citizens to demonstrate kindness, empathy, and concern for one another.
The President noted that national development cannot be achieved in an atmosphere of hatred, discrimination, and disunity, urging Ghanaians to place the collective interest of the country above personal or partisan considerations.
“It reminds us that true worship is grounded in sincerity, devotion, humility and compassion,” he added.
