Former Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, has called on the government to prioritise finding lasting solutions to the country’s ongoing power crisis instead of engaging in propaganda and political smear campaigns.

According to him, the worsening challenges in the power sector require urgent attention and practical interventions that will ease the burden on Ghanaians rather than attempts to politicise the situation.

Dr Opoku Prempeh made the call in a Facebook post on Friday, May 8, while reacting to allegations in a viral social media video claiming that he and some New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament in the Ashanti Region met with district directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and offered them money to deliberately keep lights off in their districts.

Denying the allegations, the former Energy Minister described the claims as false and malicious, insisting that the government and its communicators should focus their energies on resolving the crisis confronting the power sector.

“At a time when Ghanaians are confronted with serious challenges in the power sector, the focus of government and its communicators should be on providing lasting solutions to the crisis and not manufacturing falsehoods, spreading smear narratives, and politicising matters that directly affect the lives of our people,” he said.

Dr Opoku Prempeh also disclosed that he has instructed his lawyers to commence legal action against the radio and television station, as well as the presenter behind the allegations.

“I have therefore instructed my lawyers to commence the necessary legal processes against the radio and television station involved, as well as the presenter responsible for making these claims, to compel them to substantiate these allegations with credible evidence or face the full consequences of the law,” he added.

He maintained that Ghanaians deserve honest leadership focused on solving problems and improving conditions in the country’s energy sector.
