Mexico beat Ghana 2-0 in an international friendly in Puebla, capitalising on defensive lapses and dominating possession to hand the Black Stars a disappointing defeat.

The hosts took the lead just two minutes in after a Ghana defensive error allowed Brian Gutierrez to finish calmly past goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare.

Mexico controlled most of the first half, creating the better chances and heading into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.

Ghana showed signs of improvement after halftime, with Felix Afena Gyan forcing a save with a powerful effort in the 51st minute. Jesurun Rak-Sakyi also came close to equalising when his long-range strike crashed against the crossbar.

But Mexico responded quickly, with Guillermo Martínez doubling the lead in the 54th minute to put the game beyond reach.

The hosts finished with 59 per cent possession and eight shots on target, while Ghana managed three. Ghana’s goalkeeper made six saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

Mexico also held the edge from set pieces, winning nine corners to Ghana’s three.

Assistant coach Desmond Offei led the Black Stars in the absence of head coach Carlos Queiroz, who missed the game due to personal reasons.

The match formed part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Black Stars set to face Wales in another friendly on Tuesday, June 2, at the Cardiff City Stadium as the countdown to the tournament continues with 19 days remaining.
