Ghana’s Evonne Fatimah Britton is set for a high-profile showdown with world record holder Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the ongoing 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships on Wednesday, May 13.

Both athletes secured qualification after winning their respective heats at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, setting up what is expected to be one of the most anticipated races of the competition.

Britton booked her place in the final with a strong display in Heat 1, as she targets a medal on home soil in front of Ghanaian supporters.

In January 2026, Britton announced herself in impressive fashion on the continental stage, setting a new African leading time in the 60m hurdles. She also broke the Ghana national record after running 7.99 seconds to win at the ISTAF meeting in Düsseldorf, Germany. The performance made her the first Ghanaian woman to dip under eight seconds in the event and only the eighth African woman ever to achieve the feat.

Born in the United States, Britton has represented Ghana since 2024. Her athletics journey dates back to 2010, when she won silver in the 400m hurdles at the World U-20 Championships.

Her opponent, Tobi Amusan, enters the final as the clear favourite, boasting a strong record of dominance on both the African and global stages. Amusan holds the women’s 100m hurdles world record of 12.12 seconds, set at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, and has claimed multiple continental titles over the years.

The final is expected to be one of the headline events of the championships, with fans anticipating a fiercely competitive contest between Ghana’s rising hurdling star and Africa’s most accomplished sprint hurdler.
