President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to consider incorporating the Western rail line into the government’s flagship “Big Push” programme, in a move aimed at boosting industrial activity and improving the transportation of key exports.
Speaking at the May Day celebrations on Friday, May 1, he indicated that the project could play a critical role in unlocking economic opportunities along Ghana’s western corridor.
According to the President, completing the Western rail line will facilitate the efficient movement of natural resources, including bauxite and manganese, from mining areas to processing centres and export points.
He noted that the rail infrastructure would also significantly improve the transportation of cocoa beans from farming communities to the ports, reducing logistical challenges and post-harvest losses.
The initiative, he explained, forms part of broader efforts under the “Big Push” agenda to modernise infrastructure and stimulate job creation across key sectors of the economy.
”We will also make it easy to transport our cocoa beans from the plantation to the ports,” he added.
