About 150 school girls from selected basic schools in the Sunyani Municipality of the Bono Region have received sanitary pads as part of activities marking the 2026 Menstrual Hygiene Day.
The beneficiaries, drawn from St Patrick and Nyamaa Basic Schools, were presented with the sanitary products by the WENSAH International Foundation, a Sunyani-based charity organisation.
Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed globally on May 28 each year to promote awareness on menstrual health and hygiene and encourage action by governments and stakeholders to improve access to menstrual care services.
Speaking during the presentation, the Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Isaac Osei Amponsah, said the initiative formed part of efforts to support girls, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, to manage their menstrual health with dignity.
He disclosed that the foundation was engaging school authorities to identify girls who may require monthly support with sanitary products.
Mr. Amponsah also advised the girls against engaging in risky sexual behaviour in attempts to obtain sanitary pads or other basic needs, stressing the importance of focusing on their education.
Felicia Konadu, Health Promotion Manager at the Sunyani Municipal Directorate of Health, described menstruation as a natural process and encouraged the girls not to feel ashamed during their menstrual periods.
She further called for improved sanitation and changing facilities in schools to help girls remain comfortable and stay in school during menstruation.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the support and appealed for sustained assistance to help improve menstrual hygiene management among school girls.
