Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has urged the management of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Limited to use internally generated funds to procure additional buses instead of depending solely on government support.

The Minister made the call during the commissioning of 100 new Isuzu buses on Friday, May 22, aimed at strengthening MMT’s operations across the country.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Nikpe said the company must adopt measures to expand its fleet and improve service delivery without always relying on government intervention or external partnerships.

“We do not want a situation where you are given 100 buses, yet you are unable to mobilise resources internally to procure an additional 100 or 200 buses, but wait for the government to look for private partnership. We want to see a situation where, through your internally generated funds, you are able to expand your fleet beyond what you have today,” he said.

The Transport Minister also assured Ghanaians that the government is working to improve infrastructure across other transport sectors, including rail, maritime and aviation.

“Very soon, we will be commissioning buses from one agency to another. Beyond road transport services, you will also see the Government of Ghana commissioning projects in other transport sectors — including rail, maritime, and aviation,” he added.
