Mobile money transactions hit GH¢493bn in April

Mobile money transactions in Ghana reached a value of GH¢493.2 billion in April 2026, involving 967 million transactions, according to the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data for May 2026 released by the Bank of Ghana.

The figures represent an increase from the GH¢484.6 billion recorded in March 2026, highlighting the continued growth in the country’s digital payments ecosystem.

The report also showed that the number of registered mobile money accounts climbed to 83 million in April 2026 from 80.5 million in December 2025, while active accounts stood at 26 million. Registered agents increased to 992,000, with active agents rising to 534,000.

Balances on mobile money float rose to GH¢36.7 billion in April from GH¢35.4 billion in March, reflecting increased activity across the sector.

Meanwhile, mobile money interoperability transactions amounted to GH¢5.8 billion involving 31.7 million transactions during the month.

Cheque clearing transactions recorded a value of GH¢36.6 billion with 413,000 transactions processed, while Automated Clearing House Direct Credit transactions reached GH¢13.5 billion involving 816,000 transactions.

The data further showed that Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems Instant Pay transactions increased to GH¢79 billion in April 2026 from GH¢71.5 billion in March, with transaction volumes close to 19.9 million.
