The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has directed that the House will suspend sitting on Friday, July 10, 2026, to allow Members of Parliament from flood-affected constituencies to take part in the National General Cleaning Exercise.
The move comes after the government declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in seven regions impacted by recent flooding.
The exercise is intended to support efforts to clear blocked drains and waterways, as authorities seek to minimise the risk of further flooding.
In a statement to Parliament, Speaker Bagbin said the decision followed consultations with the leadership of the House on the institution’s role in supporting the national cleanup initiative.
He explained that MPs from affected constituencies would be better placed to provide direct leadership and coordinate activities with residents if they were present in their communities.
“Among the matters we considered was whether it would be appropriate for the House not to sit on Friday, 10th July 2026, to enable Honourable Members from the affected regions to return to their constituencies and provide direct leadership in the cleanup exercise alongside their people. Definitely, it was a unanimous yes,” he said.
The Speaker added that further arrangements concerning parliamentary business would be communicated to MPs in due course.
The National General Cleaning Exercise is expected to target flood-prone communities, with residents, local authorities, and other stakeholders expected to participate in clearing drainage systems and improving sanitation.
