The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has held an emergency meeting with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the Greater Accra Region to finalise preparations for the upcoming Presidential National Clean-Up Exercise.

The meeting followed the recent flooding that affected several parts of Accra and led to the establishment of a Presidential Post-Flood Task Force to coordinate recovery efforts and strengthen flood prevention measures.
In attendance were the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, and the Chairman of the Jospong Group, Joseph Siaw Agyapong.

Addressing participants, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, reiterated that the nationwide clean-up exercise will take place on Friday and Saturday, with the possibility of extending the exercise if necessary. President John Dramani Mahama is expected to participate personally.

The Minister directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to immediately mobilise communities, coordinate clean-up activities and engage key stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, traditional authorities, religious bodies, security agencies, political parties, community organisations and the media.
A key outcome of the meeting was the confirmation of Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s support for the exercise. The company will provide logistics and personnel to complement the efforts of the Assemblies and other stakeholders.
In addition, six of Zoomlion’s seven transfer stations will be opened to receive refuse collected during the clean-up exercise, ensuring timely evacuation and proper waste management.

The Minister described the exercise as a non-partisan national initiative, stressing that flood prevention and environmental sanitation require the active participation of all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
He also highlighted long-standing challenges confronting sanitation management, including inadequate funding, limited waste disposal infrastructure and insufficient logistics, noting that government is committed to pursuing long-term reforms while responding to the immediate aftermath of the recent floods.

The Ministry has urged all residents to actively participate in the exercise by joining community clean-up activities and contributing available cleaning tools to support the nationwide effort to restore cleaner and healthier communities.
