Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has called on Ghanaians to take an active role in monitoring road projects in their communities and report any irregularities to authorities.
He said public vigilance is helping the government expose poor workmanship and improve accountability in the execution of road projects across the country.
Speaking at a citizens’ engagement at Ndewura Jakpa Senior High School in the Savannah Region on Saturday, May 23, Mr. Agbodza encouraged young people to closely follow ongoing road works and provide real-time updates to officials.
“I want to thank the public for this level of vigilance. And I want to encourage all young people across the country to do the same with every road project that is in your community. Own it. Report to us. Don’t wait and say that the minister will know about it. Please let us know. You are not a nuisance. Day and night, tell us what is happening on Big Push projects in your community,” he said.
He stressed that contractors delivering substandard work will not be tolerated under the current administration.
“No contractor working on any road in the country or Savannah will be tolerated for doing shoddy work. I have news for you. Today, interestingly, in the Savannah region, citizens have decided to take their mobile phones and record everything that every contractor is doing. They have been sending it to President Mahama, they have been sending it to me,” he stated.
Mr. Agbodza noted that the growing involvement of citizens has made it difficult for contractors to present misleading progress reports or conceal poor performance.
He added that residents are now able to track and report daily activities on project sites, including the number of workers on the ground, strengthening oversight of government-funded projects.
