The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has stated that more than 7,000 teachers have been trained in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education following a review of gaps in the sector.

According to him, the training forms part of government efforts to integrate robotics, coding and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the new basic school curriculum.

He disclosed this during the launch of the BSTEM programme for basic schools by President John Dramani Mahama at the Sawla D/A Primary and JHS, on Friday May 22, as part of the President’s ‘Resetting Ghana tour’ of the Savannah Region.

“Together with the Ministry of Education, we have trained seven to eight thousand teachers in STEM education, science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. Mr. President, it was your Vice President, Professor Jane  Naana Opoku-Agyemang, who set up a committee to review what affected the teaching and learning of math, science, and engineering. So that has given birth to what we call the iTech BSTEM programme.

“It is to expose the children at the basic foundational level to curiosity, problem-solving, and experimentation, so that they acquire the basic skills at that level,” he said.

He said Artificial Intelligence will become an integral part of the new basic education scheme.

“Mr. President, we will revise our curriculum so robotics, coding, and Artificial Intelligence will now become an integral part of the new basic education scheme,” he said.
