Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has assured the Minority in Parliament that the bill on mining agreements, including the Damang agreement, which will be presented in the coming days, will be handled with full transparency when they are brought before the House for consideration.
He said the government is committed to ensuring that all Members of Parliament have equal access to the documents and can properly scrutinise the terms before any approval is made.
It can be recalled that in the first sitting of the 9th Parliament, the Lands, and Natural Resources Ministry withdrew the revised mining agreement from Parliament, including a recent lithium deal. The Deputy Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Yusif Sulemana, told Parliament that the withdrawal was intended to ensure broader engagement before the agreement was reintroduced for ratification.
The explanation followed mounting scrutiny from Minority MPs and policy analysts who questioned the structure of the agreement and Ghana’s negotiating position in key mining deals.
Speaking at the Leadership Media Brief on Friday, May 22, 2026, Ayariga directly appealed to Minority legislators to engage the process constructively, stressing that nothing would be concealed during deliberations.
“So I just want to urge the minority that there will be full transparency displayed in the House when we are considering these agreements. Copies will be made available to everybody and we’ll compare the agreement with all previous agreements and see if there’s any difference in terms of the Damang agreement and all agreements that have been approved in the last eight years,” he said.
He maintained that Parliament would be able to benchmark the new agreements against those approved in previous years, as scrutiny of mining deals continues to draw political attention.
