Members of the Unposted Environmental Health Officers and Assistants Association have staged a protest over delays in postings and financial clearance that have left them unemployed since completing training in 2021.
According to the group, the delay in their deployment has left many of them frustrated and financially stranded, despite repeated appeals to the relevant authorities for intervention.
The protesters, who began their demonstration at Independence Square, were initially prevented by police from marching to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, forcing them to continue their protest at the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General’s Department.
According to the group, many members have spent years waiting for deployment despite completing rigorous academic and practical training in environmental health. They argue that the delay undermines their professional relevance and places financial and emotional pressure on them and their families.
Speaking to journalists, a member of the group, Anaa Janet Esi, described the situation as disheartening and questioned the value of their years of study.
“Sometimes I’ve been asking why I even attended the School of Hygiene, because I don’t see the importance of spending three years in school, paying a whole lot of fees. My certificates are just there, lying idle, with nothing to show for them. The last time my mum asked me when they are going to pick me. She wants to benefit from what she has sown,” she said.
She further appealed for urgent action, stressing that they are ready for posting.
“Even the Bible says that what you sow is what you reap. We have sown, but we are not harvesting. Today we are here with our certificates. Come for them and post us now. We are human beings—post us now. We are begging,” she added.
