The First Lady, Lordina Dramani Mahama, has appealed to Ghanaian health professionals and young skilled workers to remain in the country and contribute to national development instead of seeking opportunities abroad.

Speaking at the Merck Foundation Ghana Alumni Summit on Tuesday, May 19, where she was recognised as Ambassador for the More Than a Mother campaign in Ghana, Mrs Mahama said the government alone cannot achieve its development agenda without the support and commitment of professionals across different sectors.

She said the administration of President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to implementing policies such as Free Primary Healthcare and the 24-Hour Economy initiative, but stressed that the success of those programmes depends heavily on the contribution of citizens.

“Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, the government is committed to providing Free Primary Healthcare to all Ghanaians, and the 24-Hour Economy. But the government cannot do it alone. It takes the passion of people like you to breathe life into these policies,” she said.

But I’d like to ask you, from a mother’s heart: If you leave, who’s going to heal our sick? Who will teach our kids? Who will tell our stories?” she stated.

Mrs Mahama clarified that she was not discouraging young professionals from exploring global opportunities, but encouraged them to remain connected to Ghana and use their knowledge to support national development.

“I’m not saying you should ignore the world, but I hope you’ll remember that Ghana needs your light. Your knowledge is a gift. While it belongs to you, its greatest value lies in uplifting your neighbour. Let’s stay, build together, and give back,” she added.

The summit also saw the recognition of
