Young inmates from Ghana’s Senior Correctional Centre (SCC) have successfully defended their title at the Second Continental Online Chess Championships for Prisoners, reaffirming the country’s dominance in the youth category of the continental competition.
The championship, held on May 12, 2026, brought together inmate participants from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Malawi, Madagascar, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe in a unique initiative aimed at promoting rehabilitation, learning, and positive engagement through chess.
Ghana was represented by 12 inmates from the Senior Correctional Centre, who entered the tournament as defending champions following their victory in the previous edition.
The inmates once again displayed strong tactical ability, discipline, and teamwork to retain the continental title and make Ghana proud on the African stage.
The competition formed part of broader efforts by correctional institutions across Africa to use sports and intellectual activities to support inmate rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
For the Ghanaian team, the tournament represented more than a contest of strategy and intellect. It also highlighted the transformative impact of rehabilitation programmes within the correctional system.
The Ghana Prisons Service has increasingly promoted educational and recreational activities, including chess, as tools for helping inmates develop critical thinking, patience, discipline, and decision-making skills.
Officials said such initiatives are aimed at empowering inmates and preparing them for successful reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
The victory by the SCC inmates has been described as an inspiration to many young people and fellow inmates, demonstrating that talent and potential can thrive despite difficult circumstances.
The Second Continental Online Chess Championships for Prisoners also continues to strengthen collaboration among African correctional institutions while promoting inclusion, personal development and social transformation through intellectual engagement.
