Residents of Abrumase Kulaw in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region are calling on the government and relevant authorities to urgently address the poor state of roads in the area

According to the residents, the deteriorating road network continues to affect transportation, economic activities, access to healthcare, and education. They say the situation becomes particularly severe during the rainy season, making the movement of people and goods increasingly difficult.

To draw attention to their concerns, residents embarked on a peaceful demonstration through the community.

During the protest, residents expressed frustration over the deplorable condition of roads in the area and the slow pace of ongoing road construction works.

Presenting a petition on behalf of the demonstrators, Mohammed Yussif raised concerns about delays in the execution of the road project being undertaken by Skycom Company Limited.

He noted that the road serves as a major transportation link connecting Kulaw and surrounding communities to other parts of the country, making its rehabilitation critical to the socio-economic development of the area.

According to him, information available to the community suggests that the contractor has not received adequate funding from the central government, resulting in a significant slowdown in construction activities.

As a result, residents continue to face serious challenges in their daily lives, particularly in the transportation of goods and services.

Mohammed Yussif further stated that the poor road network is negatively affecting access to healthcare and emergency referral services.

He added that the community continues to struggle to attract and retain qualified teachers, nurses, and other professionals, as many are reluctant to accept postings due to the poor road conditions.

The Paramount Chief of the Kulaw Traditional Area, Kulawwura Mahama Dari Kotochi Borewunche I, described the demonstration as peaceful and necessary.

He said the action was intended to draw the attention of authorities to the worsening condition of roads in the area and called for urgent intervention.

The chief emphasised that the demonstration was not politically motivated but rather reflected the genuine concerns of residents who have endured years of neglect.

Speaking to Channel One News, a resident, Sharif Alaja Kakpanasi, warned that residents may be compelled to take further action if the government fails to respond to their concerns and accelerate work on the road project.

He indicated that continued neglect of the community’s concerns could influence political activities in the area ahead of the 2028 general elections.
