The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has praised Channel One TV for its consistent coverage of sanitation issues and its reporting on initiatives being implemented by the Ministry to improve environmental cleanliness across the country.
He praised the media organisation for asking critical questions, holding stakeholders accountable, and contributing to constructive discussions on sanitation and local governance.
His comments follow reports of widespread filth in parts of the city, as well as recent flooding in the capital that displaced several residents. The situation has also prompted the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other agencies to demolish structures considered to pose a risk to residents.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ dialogue on sustainable solid waste management in Accra on Monday, June 8, the Minister said, “I commend Channel One TV and UTV; everywhere the Ministry of Local Government goes, you will see its cameras. They will follow you and ask critical questions.”
Ahmed Ibrahim also noted that Greater Accra would require additional waste disposal and treatment facilities to manage the increasing volume of municipal waste generated across the region.
According to him, the 25 Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area currently generate about 4,400 tonnes of waste daily, translating into approximately 1.6 million tonnes annually.
