The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has revealed that recent flooding, mudslides, landslides and building collapses across the Central Region have claimed 18 lives and affected more than 5,000 people in 13 districts.

Speaking to Citi News, the Central Regional Director of NADMO, Kwesi Dawood, said 377 people have also been displaced following the collapse of 58 buildings recorded across the region.

According to him, NADMO is currently conducting a comprehensive needs assessment in affected communities to determine the level of assistance required.

“Out of these 58 building collapse cases, we have 377 internally displaced persons that we are attending to currently. In addition, we have over 5,000 flood disaster victims spread across 13 districts, aside from those affected by the building collapse incidents. We have also recorded 18 deaths,” he said.

The NADMO Director warned that the organisation’s relief stores have been severely depleted due to the recurring flood-related disasters experienced since May and appealed for urgent support.

“We are appealing to Corporate Ghana, non-governmental organisations, faith-based organisations, philanthropists and individuals to support us with relief items for the affected victims. We need urgent relief assistance,” he said.

Dawood further disclosed that NADMO is collaborating with key state agencies, including the Hydrological Authority, National Security, Environmental Health Departments and the Ghana Health Service, to fumigate flood-affected communities.

He explained that the exercise had become necessary after floodwaters inundated several cemeteries raising concerns about potential disease outbreaks.

“When such incidents occur, there is a need for thorough fumigation to prevent waterborne diseases and other health risks that could lead to an epidemic,” he added.

He also commended the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service for their role in rescue and emergency response operations during the recent disasters.
