The Board Chair of the National Media Commission, Prof. Akua Biritwum, has called for a critical review of the financing model for media organisations in Ghana, warning that current funding arrangements are contributing to unethical practices and undermining the sustainability of the industry.
Speaking at the Ghana Journalists Association World Press Freedom Day 2026 Honours Night, she stressed the need for more sustainable and independent funding systems that can strengthen professionalism, credibility, and the long-term survival of media institutions.
According to her, the existing financing structure poses a serious threat not only to ethical journalism but also to the survival of media houses and the welfare of journalists.
“I would like us to look closely at the financing model that we have adopted for delivering information. This financing model, we are told, and this was underscored by UNESCO, is a big threat because it pushes certain unethical practices,” she said.
She further noted that the situation is worsening working conditions in the sector, making journalism increasingly precarious.
“It is this financing model that is threatening the existence of media institutions. It also makes the working conditions of journalists very precarious. ,And I will not be exaggerating if I say that, in terms of precarity of employment, journalists are among the most affected,” she added.
