The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called for the provision of fully equipped rescue boats to strengthen emergency response operations during flooding incidents across the country.
Assistant Divisional Officer, ADO I Alex King Nartey, said the absence of properly equipped rescue boats continues to limit the Service’s ability to effectively respond to flood-related emergencies.
Speaking to Channel One News on Monday, June 29, he explained that the situation often prevents firefighters from gaining access to affected areas, especially during severe flooding, where mobility and logistics become major challenges.
He stressed that properly fitted rescue boats are essential to enable the Service to transport equipment and respond swiftly in emergencies, particularly in heavily flooded communities.
“We need rescued boats. These rescue boats should be well equipped to enable us carry out our operations, including transporting our lightweight pump,” he stated.
He cited the recent fire outbreak at Odawna, opposite the Adabraka Market in Accra, as an example of how flooding and access constraints can severely hamper emergency operations.
The fire, which broke out on the morning of Monday, June 29, destroyed several structures after burning for hours in an area already overwhelmed by floodwaters, with firefighters initially unable to reach the scene.
The blaze occurred as torrential rains continued to affect parts of the capital, leaving homes submerged. The cause of the fire remains unknown, while emergency response challenges have renewed calls for improved disaster preparedness equipment.
