HealthTech Ghana, 37 Military Hospital open Ghana’s First Helium-Free MRI Centre

HealthTech Ghana Limited, in partnership with the Ministry of Defence, has announced the opening of Ghana’s first Philips BlueSeal MRI and expanded diagnostic centre at the 37 Military Hospital, following a public-private partnership aimed at restoring and significantly expanding diagnostic services at the facility.

The project introduces Ghana’s first 1.5T helium-free magnetic resonance imaging system, the Philips BlueSeal MRI, alongside a broader diagnostic infrastructure that includes computed tomography (CT) scanning, digital X-ray, mammography, ultrasound services, and a full laboratory suite covering haematology, biochemistry, and pathology.

The integrated setup is intended to allow patients to access comprehensive diagnostic services within a single facility, reducing delays associated with referrals across multiple health centres.

As part of the commissioning exercise, MRI scans will be offered free of charge to eligible patients for a two-week period from June 8 to June 20, 2026, strictly by appointment. Patients must be registered at the 37 Military Hospital and present a completed doctor’s request form recommending an MRI scan.

In a statement dated June 4, the partners noted that while the scan itself is free, a minimal fee will apply for MRI image reporting, which covers the formal interpretation of results by a radiology consultant or specialist.

According to the partners, the public-private partnership model is designed to address long-standing structural challenges in Ghana’s public healthcare system, including equipment breakdowns, maintenance gaps, and delays in replacing high-cost diagnostic machines.

By combining private sector investment with the institutional framework of the military hospital, the arrangement is expected to create a more sustainable system that does not depend heavily on recurrent procurement cycles for continued operation.

The initiative at 37 Military Hospital is also positioned as the first phase of a broader national expansion plan for PPP-structured diagnostic facilities, with the long-term objective of improving access to advanced medical imaging, laboratory diagnostics, and dialysis services for Ghanaians regardless of income or location.

The facility operates 24-hour CT scanning services throughout the week, in addition to digital X-ray, mammography, and ultrasound imaging, supporting diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as stroke, trauma injuries, cancer staging, and musculoskeletal disorders.

Laboratory services have also been integrated to streamline the diagnostic process, reducing the need for patients to visit multiple facilities before receiving a confirmed diagnosis, and positioning the hospital as one of the most comprehensive diagnostic centres available to the public.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Daniel Morkla, Chief Executive Officer of HealthTech Ghana Limited, said: “For too long, a Ghanaian needing an MRI  had to choose between paying thousands of cedis for a scan and in some cases travel a long distance to Accra or Kumasi for an MRI or simply going without.

“This partnership changes that. The MRI is not only the headline, but the full diagnostic suite we have brought to 37 Military Hospital means that a patient can walk in and receive the kind of comprehensive assessment 24/7 that was previously available. We are not only reopening the MRI Service after many years, but we are restoring trust in what public healthcare in Ghana can achieve.”
