Rising labour agitations and workplace instability could undermine Ghana’s appeal to investors, as concerns grow over the country’s ability to maintain industrial peace in a competitive global investment environment.
Stakeholders are being urged to strengthen dialogue and adopt more practical approaches to labour relations, with emphasis on stability, productivity and predictable regulatory systems that attract long-term capital.
Speaking at the 2026 Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management Ghana Conference in Accra, the Deputy Chairperson of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Rose Karikari Anang, warned that investor decisions are increasingly shaped by the level of industrial harmony in a country.
She stressed that persistent strikes across key sectors send negative signals to the investment community, noting: “What is happening elsewhere? How are they managing it? Sometimes you look at what is working. Can it work for us? If it can work, because you see, the investors are looking at the labour markets. They are looking at the industrialisation environment.”
She further cautioned that frequent labour disputes risk damaging Ghana’s competitiveness, adding: “People are in arms, public universities, public sector, the teachers’ union. What is happening? Why do I invest in a country where every time some strike is going on?”
According to her, global investors are closely monitoring labour relations and stability before committing resources, making industrial peace a key economic factor rather than just a workplace issue.
Madam Anang also called for a shift in mindset among stakeholders, urging them to focus on shared national interests.
She emphasized that Ghana must align with global labour practices while ensuring reforms are practical and supportive of a changing world of work.
The conference, themed “Advancing Human Resource Excellence in Ghana: Leadership, Technology and Governance,” brought together HR professionals, policymakers and industry players to discuss the future of work.
