The Head of Strategic Manufacturing at the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Kwasi Ofori-Antwi, has disclosed that Ghana’s automotive assembly industry currently provides direct employment for approximately 900 people, with total employment across the sector estimated at about 1,500 when indirect jobs are included.
Speaking at the Citi Business Festival 2026 Roundtable on the theme, “Driving Ghana Forward: The State of the Automotive Assembly Industry and Its Contribution to the Economy,” Ofori-Antwi underscored the need for greater support for the industry to help it achieve the goals outlined in Ghana’s Automotive Development Policy.
He stated that while the automotive industry has made notable progress since the introduction of the government’s automotive policy in 2019, there remains significant room for growth, particularly in employment generation and local value addition.
He noted that government and industry stakeholders are working to strengthen the automotive ecosystem by attracting component manufacturers to establish operations in Ghana.
Such investments, he said, would not only deepen local participation in vehicle production but also create thousands of additional jobs along the automotive value chain.
“The local automotive industry’s health is not in the state in terms of policy development that we are expecting it to be. We need to support the industry in achieving the objectives we established with the automotive industry policy.
“The industry is currently employing around 1,500, both direct and indirect. For the direct, we are doing around 900 and the rest is indirect but we are looking beyond that. We are looking at how we can attract component manufacturing within the space.”
