The Tamale Circuit Court has granted bail to two midwives from the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga who are standing trial in connection with the alleged disappearance of a newborn baby at the health facility.

The accused persons are identified as Frank Atanga, 52, and Mariam Mohammed, 32.

The case was heard before Her Honour Afua Srakubea Agyeman-Darbu, who granted bail to the two accused persons under specific conditions pending the continuation of legal proceedings.

According to the court’s ruling, each accused person was granted bail in the sum of GH¢150,000 with two sureties.

The court further directed that the sureties satisfy all the necessary requirements before the accused persons can enjoy the bail terms.

Frank Atanga and Mariam Mohammed have been charged with conspiracy to steal and abduction in relation to the disappearance of the newborn baby.

Prosecutors allege that the two played roles in the circumstances surrounding the missing child, leading to their arrest and subsequent prosecution.

The disappearance of the newborn attracted widespread attention within the East Gonja Municipality and beyond, with many residents expressing concern over the incident and calling for a thorough investigation to establish the facts and ensure justice is served.

Although details of the prosecution’s evidence have not yet been fully presented in open court, the charges suggest that investigators believe there was a coordinated effort linked to the alleged disappearance of the infant.

The accused persons have not been convicted and remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.

The court adjourned the matter and ordered both accused persons to reappear on July 9, 2026, when proceedings are expected to continue.
