The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has dismissed claims that the government has allocated slots to Majority MPs to send supporters to the FIFA World Cup, describing the allegation as a “blatant falsehood.”
According to him, no Member of Parliament from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been given slots to fly supporters to the tournament.
His remarks come after the Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, alleged that President John Dramani Mahama had allocated slots to MPs and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to facilitate the travel of supporters to cheer on the Black Stars at the World Cup.
He argued that such a move would contradict the government’s earlier position that it would not use public funds to sponsor supporters to the tournament.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Agbana rejected the allegation and challenged the Minority Whip to provide evidence.
“The statement he made on the floor yesterday about the Sports Ministry or government allocating slots to members of Parliament from the NDC, that statement is not true. It’s a blatant falsehood,” he said.
Agbana explained that while the government had announced that no public funds would be used to airlift supporters to the World Cup, a fundraising exercise had been organised to attract private support for Ghana’s participation.
“The government earlier announced that no public funds will be spent to airlift supporters to the World Cup. However, the government engaged in a fundraising exercise and private individuals and organisations donated towards that exercise,” he said.
“What it means is that any Ghanaian that you may see at the World Cup may be part of people being sponsored privately and not from public funds.”
The Ketu North lawmaker suggested that the allegation may have stemmed from the previous administration’s handling of supporter travel to international tournaments.
“They come from a background where they spent public funds on airlifting supporters, their party apparatchiks, to World Cups. And so, even when it is not happening, they are assuming that it is happening,” he said.
“But I can tell you emphatically that no member of Parliament from the Majority has been allocated slots to take people to the World Cup. It is a blatant falsehood,” he stated.
He further called on Habib Iddrisu to substantiate the claim, insisting that those making allegations have a responsibility to provide evidence.
