A 34-year-old farmer, Afrifa Adu Kofi, has been sentenced to 96 months imprisonment with hard labour by the Obuasi Circuit Court for causing harm to three people during an attack at Adansi Odumasi, near Obuasi.
He was also handed 36 months for the possession of a pump-action gun without lawful authority. The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently.
According to police prosecution, on May 31, 2026, at about 11:30am, Afrifa Adu Kofi and others at large stormed a mining site in Adansi Odumasi with cutlasses, sticks and a gun.
The statement further disclosed that, the accused and his group attacked workers Mohammed Abdulai, Halidu Seidu, Nasaratu Fuseini and Stephen Otoo. The victims sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to AngloGold Ashanti Hospital. Halidu Seidu was later referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Afrifa Adu Kofi was charged on five counts: four counts of causing harm contrary to Section 69 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29/60), and one count of possession of arms without license contrary to Section 11(a) & 26(1)(a) of NRCD 9/1972.
He pleaded guilty and was convicted on three counts of causing harm against Mohammed Abdulai, Halidu Seidu and Nasaratu Fuseini. The count involving Stephen Otoo returned a not guilty verdict. He was also convicted on the firearms charge.
In his caution statement, the accused admitted assaulting the four victims with a cutlass and shooting Mohammed Abdulai with a pump-action gun. He failed to produce documents covering the weapon when asked by police.
