A Former Member of Parliament for Asante Mampong and two-time New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Ing. Addai Nimo, has described Awentami Paul Afoko as the only candidate capable of reuniting the party as it embarks on efforts to reorganize following its 2024 electoral defeat.
According to Mr. Nimo, Mr. Afoko’s personal experience of overcoming difficult moments within the party places him in a unique position to reconcile aggrieved members and restore unity.
Addressing NPP delegates in the Upper West Region, Mr. Nimo said Mr. Afoko’s return to the party’s leadership would inspire confidence among members who have become disillusioned.
“If we give him the mandate, he can go to those of our brothers and sisters who are aggrieved, and they are sitting somewhere, and then he will go and tell them, ‘When I went back and told my story to the party, they have renewed my mandate for me, so all of you come and let’s go.’ Won’t they listen?” he asked.
Mr. Nimo argued that the NPP’s greatest challenge was not competition from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) but internal divisions.
“The problem is not NDC, the problem is we, the internal people. We have not treated ourselves well,” he said.
He expressed confidence that a united NPP would have little difficulty returning to power.
Mr. Nimo described Mr. Afoko’s return to the party’s leadership as non-negotiable, saying he possesses the qualities needed to rebuild the party and reclaim lost parliamentary seats, particularly in regions where the NPP currently has no representation.
“He is more than capable of reorganizing the party for effectiveness and efficiency. At this crucial moment, when we have no seats in some regions of the country, we need an amazing person to occupy the position. We have four regions with 53 seats, and the NPP has none. We need a capable hand to salvage the party,” he stated.
Mr. Afoko has been touring constituencies across the country, promoting what he calls the “3Rs Agenda”—Reuniting, Rebuilding, and Returning the NPP to power.
His campaign has consistently emphasized the slogan “One NPP, One People” while advocating greater empowerment of polling station executives, constituency executives, and grassroots members.
Mr. Afoko has also pledged to improve the welfare of party officials, provide better logistics, and ensure greater inclusion of the rank-and-file in decision-making, arguing that strengthening the party’s grassroots structures is essential to rebuilding the NPP after its 2024 electoral defeat.
