The Founder of Peace and Love Hospitals and President of Breast Care International, Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, has renewed her appeal to the government to waive taxes and duties on donated drugs and medical supplies at the country’s ports to help improve healthcare delivery across Ghana.
Speaking during a donation exercise on Sunday, June 14, 2026, Dr Wiafe-Addai said several donor organisations and charitable institutions were willing to support health facilities with essential medicines, medical equipment, and other healthcare-related items.
She explained that many hospitals, particularly those serving vulnerable communities, depend on donations to supplement limited resources and enhance patient care.
Dr Wiafe-Addai noted that taxes and duties imposed on donated medical supplies often discourage potential donors and reduce the amount of assistance that ultimately reaches healthcare providers.
“We appeal to the government to waive taxes and duties on donated drugs and medical supplies at our ports. Many donor organisations are ready to support healthcare facilities, but these charges sometimes become a challenge and limit the support that can be provided,” she said.
According to her, removing such barriers would encourage more donations and help hospitals access critical resources needed to improve healthcare services.
She said healthcare institutions across the country continued to face resource constraints and that easing the importation of donated medical items would strengthen efforts to deliver quality care to patients.
Dr Wiafe-Addai expressed hope that the government would consider the appeal as part of broader measures to support the health sector and improve access to essential healthcare services, especially for underserved populations.
