Former Director-General of the Commission for TVET and Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, has raised concerns over the shortage of teachers and inadequate funding for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
According to him, only about a thousand teaching and non-teaching personnel have been recruited for TVET institutions under the Mahama administration, with insufficient funds provided for consumables.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, June 26, the Offinso North MP called on the government to place greater emphasis on TVET development by increasing investment in the sector.
“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP 2028 flagbearer, doesn’t want the NDC government to fail, but he wants them to do the right thing. So when we come to power, we can take it to the next level. We say that we should focus on TVET. How much is being given to TVET training as far as the consumables are concerned?
“Recently, we need teachers to go to TVET institutions. How many were given? Just a thousand teaching and non-teaching staff, how can it fit TVET? The robust TVET you need is the second-cycle TVET, which is equivalent to the German dual system,” he said.
Dr Kyei Asamoah further urged the government to strengthen collaboration with industry to provide practical training opportunities for TVET students, enabling them to acquire employable skills and secure jobs after completing their programmes, as part of efforts to address rising unemployment.
