The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has condemned the reported shooting of a young man during a confrontation involving a joint Military and Police team and some youth at Kyebi Zongo in the Eastern Region, urging residents to remain calm as investigations continue.

The victim was reportedly shot in the leg during the incident, which involved security personnel believed to be attached to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).

In a statement issued on Sunday, July 12, the MP described the incident as unfortunate and said no community should have to endure such violence.

“I strongly condemn every form of violence and brutality that endangers the lives and safety of our people. While the full facts surrounding the incident are yet to be officially established, no community should have to witness such unfortunate scenes,” he said.

Mr. Agyemang said he had been informed that the injured man was receiving treatment at the Kyebi Government Hospital and wished him a full and speedy recovery on behalf of the people of Abuakwa South.

He appealed to residents, particularly the youth, to exercise restraint and allow the appropriate state institutions to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The lawmaker also called on the relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation to establish the facts and ensure justice is served.

“As Member of Parliament, I remain committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace, law and order prevail within our constituency,” he said.

He further urged residents to remain united, protect one another and work together to preserve peace in Abuakwa South while investigations are underway.

The incident reportedly occurred at Kyebi Zongo on Saturday, July 11, during a confrontation between some youth and military personnel. One young man sustained gunshot injuries, although authorities are yet to officially establish the circumstances leading to the shooting.
