Constituency Executives of the New Patriotic Party in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency have rejected the decision by the party’s National Leadership to annul recent constituency elections, describing it as an affront to internal democracy.
Addressing a press conference in the constituency, the chairman-elect, Kwaku Ofosu, said no lawful directive had been communicated to them by the Ashanti Regional Executive Committee to suspend the elections.
They insisted the Regional Executive Committee supervised and authorized every stage of the process, which culminated in the successful conduct of the polls.
On the issue of a court injunction, the executives stated that the interim injunction granted by the High Court had lapsed and was not renewed before the elections were held.
According to them, there was therefore no subsisting court order restraining the Regional Executive Committee, the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, delegates, or aspirants from participating.
They argued that the involvement of the Electoral Commission and the Police reinforces the legality and credibility of the elections.
The executives have appealed to the National Leadership of the NPP to review the decision to annul the elections, warning that it undermines the will of over one thousand delegates who voted and sets a dangerous precedent for internal party democracy.
They emphasized that political disagreements should be resolved through dialogue and the party’s constitutional mechanisms, not by nullifying a free, fair, and transparent election.
The group clarified that they neither organized nor supervised the elections, but presented themselves before delegates in accordance with party rules, and that the delegates’ verdict deserves respect.
They issued a stern warning that no elections will be conducted again in the constituency.
They thus called on the National Leadership to uphold the democratic mandate and preserve party unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.
