Justice William Atuguba, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, has said former Asante Akim North Member of Parliament, Andy Appiah-Kubi, paid the price for his outspoken campaign against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

According to Justice Atuguba, Mr Appiah-Kubi’s decision to publicly call for the removal of Mr Ofori-Atta demonstrated courage, but it eventually contributed to his defeat in the 2024 parliamentary election.

Speaking at the D.F. Annan Memorial Lecture in Parliament on Thursday, July 16, Justice Atuguba said he had developed admiration for the former MP because of his stance against the former Finance Minister.

“Another person I have never seen him, but since the days of his bold uprising, if I may put it, against the former Finance Minister, I have developed a soft spot for him,” he said.

He added that Mr Appiah-Kubi’s defeat was the consequence of taking that position.

“The price he paid for that was the loss of his seat,” Justice Atuguba stated.

Mr Appiah-Kubi, who served as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Asante Akim North, was among lawmakers who openly criticised Ken Ofori-Atta’s handling of Ghana’s economy and called for his removal during the country’s economic challenges.
