Cabinet has rescheduled its meeting to finalise the government’s position paper on the review of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution after the sitting on Friday, July 10 was postponed due to the National Clean-Up Exercise.
Although a new date is yet to be announced, Cabinet has already held two meetings to review the position paper, with only a few amendment proposals left to be considered before the document is finalised.
Once approved, the Attorney General and legal team will consolidate the position paper before submitting it, together with the Constitution Review Committee’s report, to the Constitution Review Implementation Committee to begin the implementation process.
Speaking ahead of the expected crucial meeting, President John Dramani Mahama noted that the proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution are intended to strengthen the document rather than undermine its core principles.
“The 1992 Constitution has served us well. It has been one of our best constitutions and that is what has been the underpinnings of the Fourth Republic and the Fourth Republic has lasted longer than any other republic in our history. We believe that any tweaking of the constitution will only go to strengthen it even more and make it a living document to take us for the next 30 years,” he said.
