The President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH), Dr. Paul Owusu Donkor, has called on the government to issue clear directives on critical organisations that are exempted from participating in national sanitation exercises.
His comments follow a viral video in which Cape Coast Mayor George Justice Arthur ordered the closure of a community pharmacy during the recent sanitation exercise and directed customers to leave the premises.
Speaking to Citi News, Dr. Owusu Donkor reiterated that clear guidelines will help prevent similar incidents.
“Prior to the day of the exercise some community pharmacists reached out to me to seek clarity on the directive because it was so blanket. I would advise that subsequently there should be clarity on such exemptions. Institutions who are mandated to do a total close and partial,” he stated.
He also urged members of the society to comply with sanitation exercise directives while ensuring that essential healthcare services are provided to patients.
According to him, pharmacies can adopt a staff rotation system where some employees attend to patients while others participate in the clean-up exercise.
“We have also instructed all pharmacists that when directives come, in as much as they are essential service providers, keeping the environment clean is something we should all support,” he added.
