The family of the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, has pledged to preserve the peace and unity he championed during his reign after officially informing the Presidency of his death.
A delegation led by Naa Yeb’Nanton Naa Mahamadu V visited the Jubilee House on Monday, July 20, to formally announce the passing of the Dagbon king and express gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the support he offered during the monarch’s illness and after his death.
Addressing the President, the delegation said, “We commit to carrying forward his legacy. We commit to maintaining the peace he worked so hard to build. We commit to continuing the bridge-building that defined his reign.”
The family said the overlord of Dagbon died on Saturday, July 11, 2026 and was buried in the early hours of Monday, July 13, at the Gbewaa Palace in accordance with Islamic tradition and Dagbon custom.
The family said the third-day prayers were observed on July 16, while the seventh-day prayers will be held on Friday, July 24. It also announced that the installation of the Regent, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu II, is scheduled for Friday, July 31.
The delegation commended President Mahama for facilitating medical treatment for the late king abroad when his health deteriorated and for ensuring the return of his remains to Ghana after his death.
