The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has cautioned against linking the party’s internal decisions to its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, insisting that such decisions are taken by the appropriate structures of the party and not individuals.
He said decisions regarding the management of disputes arising from the party’s constituency elections are products of deliberations by the party’s leadership bodies and should not be attributed to the flagbearer.
Speaking on News Digest on Citi FM on Saturday, July 11, 2026, Haruna Mohammed said the party’s flagbearer does not participate in determining matters before the party’s National Council or National Executive Committee.
“I’ve heard people dragging the name of the flag-bearer into this. And I want to use this medium to let everybody know that decisions of the party are not decisions of individuals,” he said.
“The flag-bearer is not a lawyer. He’s not a judge. And he doesn’t sit on any case,” he added.
His comments come amid controversies surrounding some NPP constituency elections, with some constituencies facing legal challenges and court injunctions that have affected the electoral process.
Haruna Mohammed explained that where legal issues arise, the party follows due process and respects the decisions of the courts.
He cited the party’s directive to suspend elections in constituencies affected by court injunctions, including Assin South and Pungpungpu, until the matters are determined.
“When there is an injunction that is recognized in law, the party gives an instruction for a halt until the determination of that particular matter is met,” he said.
The NPP Deputy General Secretary said the party’s approach was based on respect for Ghana’s laws and its internal structures, adding that such decisions had precedents within the party.
“If anything that is being determined by the National Council of the Party, the National Executive Committee of the Party, to be participated, it is not a decision of the flag-bearer. It is the decision of the party,” he stated.
Haruna Mohammed reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to resolving internal disputes through lawful processes, saying the party would continue to uphold democratic principles.
