Embrace discipline, honesty to fight societal challenges – Chief Justice urges Ghanaians

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has underscored the need to conduct a deeper introspection of the Ghanaian character in order to deal with challenges confronting the country.

Speaking at the Church of Pentecost’s National Development Conference, the Chief Justice, who expressed concern about heavy environmental pollution, including irresponsible waste disposal and illegal mining giving rise to catastrophic floods and other disasters, he expressed that the application of law and other technical measures alone cannot bring a solution but rather the shaping of character.

He charged families, schools, traditional authorities and religious organisations to instil honesty, integrity and passion into Ghanaians to help deal with corruption and other societal challenges.

“For many years, we have discussed how to develop Ghana. We have debated policies, budgets, rules, laws, industries and investments. All of these matter. Yet, development is never only an economic project. It is first a moral project.

“Recent events remind us of this truth. When drains are choked with refuse, when rivers are poisoned by illegal mining, when public trust is traded for private gain, the problem before us is not merely legal or technical; it is moral.

“As Chief Justice, I know the importance of the law, yet I also know its limits. Courts can determine rights. They can punish wrongdoing. They can uphold the Constitution. But no court can compel honesty. No judgement can create integrity. And no centre can manufacture compassion. That work belongs to families, schools, traditional authorities and churches.”
