Ghana has congratulated Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye on his election as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), pledging its full support for his leadership of the regional bloc.

In a Facebook post on Monday, July 20, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, extended the government’s best wishes to President Faye following his election to the position.

He expressed confidence in President Faye’s ability to steer the affairs of the West African regional body, wishing him success, wisdom, and courage in carrying out his responsibilities.

“Ghana congratulates the newly elected Chairman of ECOWAS, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, President of the Republic of Senegal,” he said.

Ablakwa further reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to working closely with the Senegalese leader and supporting efforts aimed at strengthening regional cooperation, peace, and development within ECOWAS.

“President Faye can always count on Ghana’s principled support and genuine cooperation,” he added.

Faye emerged as the new chairman during the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Sierra Leone.

Faye emerged as chairman on Sunday July 19 during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where regional leaders gathered to deliberate on key political, economic and security issues affecting West Africa.

The Senegalese president succeeds his Sierra Leonean counterpart and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, Julius Maada Bio.

His election comes at a critical juncture for the regional bloc, which is still battling terrorism, political instability, and the challenges of economic integration, while also redefining ties with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger after their withdrawal from ECOWAS.
