Ghana crash out of World Cup after 1-0 defeat to Colombia

Ghana’s FIFA World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 32 following a 1-0 defeat to Colombia at Kansas City Stadium, with the Black Stars falling just short of a place in the Round of 16.

Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute, calmly converting a cross from Luis Suárez to give the South Americans an early lead in a closely contested encounter.

Ghana suffered an early setback when defender Marvin Senaya was forced off injured after just 13 minutes, with Alidu Seidu replacing him. Moments later, Arias capitalised on a defensive lapse to score what proved to be the winner.

Despite conceding early, the Black Stars responded positively and searched for an equaliser, but Colombia’s well-organised defence limited them to few clear-cut chances.

Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi kept Ghana in the contest with a series of important saves, including an outstanding stop late in the first half to deny Johan Mojica.

The second half became increasingly physical, with both teams receiving yellow cards as Ghana pushed forward in search of a leveller. However, Colombia managed the game effectively, enjoying long spells of possession and frustrating the Black Stars’ attacking efforts.

The victory sends Colombia into the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland, while Ghana bow out after progressing to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
