Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have rescued a man who became trapped in the wreckage of a cargo truck following a head-on collision with an excavator on the Kpetoe-Sarakope Road in the Volta Region.
The incident occurred on Sunday, July 12, after a MAN Diesel cargo truck collided with the excavator along the Sarakope-Aflao stretch of the road, prompting an emergency response from firefighters stationed at Kpetoe.
Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Hope Bedzrah, said the rescue team responded swiftly to a distress call and successfully extricated the victim from the mangled vehicle.
According to him, the injured man was handed over to emergency medical personnel at the scene before being transported to the Ho Teaching Hospital for treatment.
The circumstances leading to the crash, he disclosed remain under investigation, urging motorists to adhere strictly to road traffic regulations to help reduce road crashes and protect lives and property.
Meanwhile, some residents have linked the increasing number of accidents along sections of the road to ongoing construction works in the area.
They alleged that contractors had parked heavy construction equipment on road shoulders and, in some cases, left deep excavated trenches without adequate warning signs, reflective markings or safety barriers to alert motorists.
The residents have therefore called on contractors and the relevant road authorities to strengthen safety measures at construction sites by providing proper signage, lighting and effective traffic management to minimise accidents and ensure the safety of road users.
