The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has paid tribute to the late Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari II, describing him as a peacebuilder whose leadership helped restore unity and stability within the Dagbon Kingdom.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, and signed by the Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, the Ministry highlighted the late Yaa-Naa’s contribution to ending the Dagbon conflict, promoting national unity and preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage.

“The late Yaa-Naa is remembered for his immense role in ending the Dagbon conflict and ascending the throne as a man of peace and ability,” the Ministry stated.

It added that his reign “reflected the enduring values of wisdom, dignity, and selfless service that define the revered institution of chieftaincy.”

Describing his passing as a loss not only to Dagbon but the entire nation, the statement noted that his commitment to reconciliation, development and the welfare of his people would continue to inspire future generations.

“The passing of such a distinguished traditional ruler is not only a loss to Dagbon but to the entire nation,” the statement added.

The Ministry extended its condolences to the Regent, chiefs and elders of the Dagbon Traditional Area, the Royal Family, the Regional House of Chiefs and the people of Ghana, while praying for strength and comfort for all those mourning the loss.
