The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, has described the death of the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, as a great loss to Ghana, saying the late monarch united the Dagbon Kingdom through the principles of fairness and equity.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Speaker of Parliament by a delegation of chiefs and elders from Dagbon to announce the demise of the Ya-Na formally, Mr Ayariga said the late king’s leadership helped foster peace and unity in the kingdom.
“He united Dagbon based on the principles of fairness, equity and give-and-take. His passing is a great loss to the country,” he said.
Mr Ayariga also revealed that the late Ya-Na had pledged his support for efforts to restore lasting peace in Bawku.
The family had said the overlord of Dagbon died on Saturday, July 11, 2026 and was buried in the early hours of Monday, July 13, at the Gbewaa Palace in accordance with Islamic tradition and Dagbon custom.
The family said the third-day prayers were observed on July 16, while the seventh-day prayers will be held on Friday, July 24. It also announced that the installation of the Regent is scheduled for Friday, July 31.
