President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that the succession process in Dagbon will remain peaceful following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II.
President Mahama described the late traditional ruler as a leader who laid a strong foundation for the stability of the Dagbon Kingdom before his death on July 16.
Receiving a delegation from the Dagbon Traditional Council and the Northern Regional House of Chiefs at the Presidency to formally inform him of the Ya-Na’s passing, the President said the late king’s commitment to reconciliation and institution-building had positioned Dagbon for an orderly transition.
He noted that Ya-Na Abukari II understood that lasting peace must be built on strong institutions, highlighting his leadership in securing the unanimous adoption of the Dagbon Constitution as one of the defining achievements of his reign.
According to President Mahama, the constitution provides a lasting framework for governance, succession and stability within the kingdom.
“I’m positive that he has laid the foundation for a smooth succession in Dagbon. And I wish to assure the chiefs and people of Dagbon that government is standing in full solidarity with you during this period of mourning. We shall work closely with the Dagbon Traditional Council to ensure that the appropriate state courtesies and support are extended as preparations are made for the final funeral rites of our departed king,” he said.
President Mahama praised the late Ya-Na for transforming Dagbon from a kingdom once affected by divisions into a symbol of reconciliation, unity and hope through patience, humility and a commitment to peace.
He assured the chiefs and people of Dagbon that the government would continue to work closely with the Dagbon Traditional Council throughout the mourning period and provide the necessary support for the final funeral rites.
