The Minority in Parliament has alleged that free tickets provided by the government for Ghanaian supporters to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup were instead sold.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, July 14, the First Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, called on the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, to appear before the House to brief lawmakers on Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.

“Ghana participated in the World Cup, a mega tournament like that; we were not briefed before we participated, and we exited the tournament, and the Minister hasn’t briefed us. The Sports Minister should come and brief us. A lot of things happened at the World Cup, and a lot of Ghanaians were not happy. The President informed us that free tickets were going to be given, but those tickets were sold; are you aware?

The President, John Dramani Mahama, speaking at a diaspora town hall meeting on Sunday, May 31, estimated that supporting a single fan through the entire tournament could cost nearly $11,000, making mass sponsorship unsustainable under current economic conditions.

As a result, he said the government would focus its support on organised supporters’ groups and Ghanaian communities already based in host cities.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, dismissed claims that tickets procured for Ghanaian supporters for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were sold illegally, insisting that the government was not involved in any such activity.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, June 1, the Minister said the claims were largely based on speculation and a misunderstanding of how arrangements for supporters were being managed.

He explained that various private organisations, including travel and tour companies, were independently organising supporter travel and fan packages, which were separate from the government’s arrangements.
