The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Richard Kofi Asiedu, has rendered an unqualified apology to Obaatanpa Radio and the media fraternity following an attack on the station’s premises.

The incident reportedly occurred after discussions on the station’s morning programme concerning internal issues within the NDC. Some individuals believed to be affiliated with the party, including the Awutu Senya East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Seth Sabonoo Banini, and Dr Asiedu, were accused of disrupting the station’s operations, assaulting staff, and forcing the station off air.

Speaking to the media after a closed-door engagement with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Dr Asiedu accepted responsibility as a party leader in the region and apologised for the incident.

He said his visit to the station was not intended to interfere with its programming but was aimed at engaging management over concerns arising from the discussions on air.

“The absence of a management meeting turned chaotic and brought about some misunderstanding. As human nature, it’s bound to happen. Therefore, I stand in as a leader of the region, and I apologise to Obaatanpa,” he said.

He also appealed to media houses across the country to uphold responsible journalism while acknowledging the media’s constitutional role.

The apology follows a seven-day ultimatum issued by the GJA to Dr Asiedu to apologise over the alleged assault on journalists and disruption of operations at Obaatanpa Radio.

The association had condemned the incident and demanded accountability, describing any attack on media practitioners as a threat to press freedom and Ghana’s democratic values.
