A 39-year-old teacher accused of assaulting a student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region has been granted bail of GH¢80,000 by the Nyinahini District Court.
Eric Apaflo Buernortey, who has been charged with assault, pleaded not guilty when he reappeared before the court for the second time on Friday.
The court, presided over by a relieving judge, Lord Delvin Essandoh, granted the accused bail with three sureties, who must be residents within the jurisdiction of the court. He was also ordered to report to the case investigator every two weeks on Mondays.
The latest court appearance follows an earlier arraignment after the incident came to public attention on June 8, 2026. However, the matter was withdrawn by the Police at the time, resulting in the accused being discharged before he was later brought back before the court.
During proceedings, the court cautioned the public against circulating misinformation about the case, stressing that such actions would not be tolerated.
“The public is hereby cautioned against any misinformation in respect of the matter as any misinformation would not be tolerated,” the court stated.
Presenting the facts, the prosecution led by Chief Inspector Eric Owusu told the court that the complainant, Patricia Chibu, is an 18-year-old final-year student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, where the accused also works as a tutor and caretaker of the Adusei Hostel near the school.
According to the prosecution, on June 8, 2026, the accused confronted the complainant and other male students staying at the hostel over alleged misconduct. The court heard that during the confrontation, the student allegedly insulted and mocked the teacher, which led to the accused assaulting him.
The prosecution further told the court that after the incident, the student invited some residents to the scene, who attempted to attack the teacher, but he was rescued by a Police Patrol Team and taken to the Police Station along with the complainant.
The student was issued a police medical form to seek treatment and later returned it duly endorsed by a medical officer. The prosecution added that the accused was subsequently detained, investigations conducted, and a caution statement obtained from him.
The case has been adjourned, with the accused expected to comply with the bail conditions while investigations and further legal processes continue.
