Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah was arrested on Sunday, July 12, 2026, after a disturbance disrupted voting during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constituency Executive Elections in Afigya Sekyere East Constituency in the Ashanti Region.
According to eyewitnesses and video footage from the scene, a group allegedly led by Afrifa-Mensah stormed the polling centre in the early hours of voting, triggering panic among delegates and party officials.
Sources at the centre alleged that some members of the group were carrying firearms, heightening tensions as the confrontation unfolded. The claims have not yet been independently verified.
Video footage circulating from the scene showed several men in civilian clothing amid a heavy deployment of armed personnel from the Ghana Police Service.
One man, identified by witnesses as Afrifa-Mensah and wearing a green and black jersey with yellow stripes, was seen being escorted by police officers into the back of a police vehicle. Other individuals were also taken into custody, while some fled the scene.
Police officers moved quickly to restore calm, cordoning off sections of the venue with red and white police tape while maintaining a security presence around the polling centre.
Following the intervention, voting resumed and was proceeding peacefully, according to officials at the centre.
The Ghana Police Service had not issued an official statement by the time of publication confirming the arrests, the identities of those detained, or any charges that may be brought.
Party officials urged delegates to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel to ensure the constituency executive elections are conducted in a peaceful, free and transparent manner.
The NPP is conducting Constituency Executive Elections across Ghana this weekend as part of its internal reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
